A Conan Exiles Skeleton Key guide will help you get some of the best weapons in the game. Skeletons Keys open Legendary Chests, which each have a Legendary Weapon inside.
I remember my first encounter with a Legendary Creature was the White Tiger. He was so strong; I was sure he was a World Boss or something. But we took him down and found a chest hidden in the rock walls.
We opened it to find Glimmermoon, I believe, which our tank quickly picked up. In retrospect, a glowing axe was one of the coolest first legendaries that we could have found, and I no longer wish it would have been daggers for me.
Conan Exiles Skeleton Key Overview
- Skeleton Keys open Legendary Chests
- Some Legendary Creatures guard Legendary Chests, but not all of them
- The only way to get Skeleton Keys is to kill Legendary Creatures
- The easiest Legendary Creatures are Rockslide and Giant Snake
- Legendary Creatures are meant to be taken on with a group or thralls
- Legendary Creatures are like boss fights, and stronger than many bosses, so set time aside and prepare accordingly
How to Open Legendary Chests in Conan Exiles
There is a lot of misinformation and contradicting “facts” about opening Legendary Chests on Conan Exiles. Once upon a time, you had to be level 60 to open Legendary Chests. But I’ve opened them as early as level 15 or so.
I believe that on some official servers with certain settings, you cannot open Legendary Chests unless you are level 60. But most of the time, you can open them at any level as long as you have a key.
Every Skeleton Key Location in Conan Exiles
Every Legendary Creature in Conan Exiles drops Skeletons Keys. I’ve heard that there is a 50% chance that they will drop one but I believe that has changed because I have gotten one every single time.
Black Yeti
- HP – 22,625
- Armor – 84
- KB Defense – 25
- XP – 43,200
- Location – Rockfall Canyon
Black Yeti is a strong Legendary Creature with a single spawn point that is easy to miss. He’s not a tough fight despite his high health because he is super slow. He either hits you, stomps you, or jumps at you.
The Black Yeti is quite different in appearance than the standard Yetis and are one of the only Legendary Creatures that have a standard version that only spawns during the Purge.

- Advanced Armor Patch Kit
- Alchemical Base
- Demon Blood
- Feral Flesh
- Fur
- Glowing Essence
- Goldstone
- Shadebloom
- Ice
- Skeleton Key
- Silverstone
- Steelfire
Demon Spider
- HP – 20,871
- Armor – 84
- KB Defense – 80
- XP – 108,000
- Location – Weaver’s Hollow, Wreck of the Martyr, Spinner’s Ridge, Wine Cellar
Demon Spider has three spawns on Exiled Lands, which is one of the highest Legendary Creature spawn rates. She gives a lot of experience, too, making fighting her well worth it.
I wouldn’t say that Demon Spider is an easy kill because she’s fast and has a lot of attacks. Her corrupting mist attack is tough to dodge, but thankfully, it’s not strong; it just corrupts. I recommend hit and runs, when entails waiting for her to engage, hitting after you dodge, then backing away and doing it again.
Other Drops
- Brimstone
- Chitin
- Demon Blood
- Demonic Spider Head
- Feral Flesh
- Gossamer
- Ichor
Feasts-On-Flesh
- HP – 11,375
- Armor – 47
- KB Defense – 50
- XP – 64,800
- Location – Bin-Yakin’s Seal
Feasts-On-Flesh is one of the Child of Jhil demons located in the Highland caves. To get to Feasts-On-Flesh, you have to go into a cave marked by a Bonfire on a ledge near the Great Dam.
Inside, there are Child of Jhil minions, and halfway through the cave is the Feasts-On-Flesh boss. He’s an average fight that just has higher stats than the small Child of Jhil demons, and he drops Black Blood tools, which are very good.
Other Drops
- Black Blood Pick
- Black Blood Hatchet
- Black Blood Sickle
- Black Blood Skinning Knife
Giant Crocodile
- HP – 17,415
- Armor – 72
- KB Defense – 0
- XP – 90,000
- Location – The Sentinels, Mek-kamoses’s Spire, Priestking’s Retreat, Waterhole Outlook, Heliograph Heights
Giant Crocodile is one of the most common Legendary Creatures with five spawn points. However, the one in Gallaman’s Tomb is not the same as it is a boss, not a Legendary Creature.
The Legendary Creature version has a few attacks to lookout for, such as the lunging or swinging knockdown attacks – you can just dodge them. The most annoying attack in my opinion is the melee bite attack because it’s so fast and hard to dodge.
Other Drops
- Fangs
- Feral Flesh
- Reptile Hide
Giant Snake
- HP – 8265
- Armor – 84
- KB Defense – 0
- XP – 108,000
- Location – The Arena, Citadel of the Triumvirate
Giant Snakes have an annoying lunge attack that deals poison damage, even if you are shielded, but it’s also easy to hit. So in short, you can both do a lot of damage to each other rather quickly.
I recommend fighting it from behind as it can help you avoid its lunge and get as much damage in as possible. When it turns, roll to get behind it and you can avoid most of its damage.
Other Drops
- Demon Blood
- Feral Flesh
- Ichor
Giant Spider
- HP – 20,871
- Armor – 84
- KB Defense – 0
- XP – 108,000
- Location – The Dryfalls, The Silkwood, Spinebreaker’s Flank, Skittering Cavern
Giant Spiders are almost always surrounded by a ton of baby spiders that I suggest taking on first and then rushing to take down the boss. They do a lot of poison damage too, so keep some antidotes on hand.
Giant Spiders have multiple lunge attacks, one short-ranged and one long-ranged. They can easily reach you with it but it’s easy to dodge because they charge it for a long time and the animation is obvious.
Other Drops
- Chitin
- Demon Blood
- Feral Flesh
- Gossamer
- Ichor
King Rhino
- HP – 28,680
- Armor – 75
- KB Defense – 1000
- XP – 95,400
- Location – Muriela’s Hope, Rhinohorn Ridge
King Rhinos can knock you down and do a ton of damage with their trample attack. It’s a good idea to bait it out when you can because if you dodge, then right after is an incredible opportunity to attack these tanky creatures.
You will have to commit to fighting them and converse stamina. They could take you quite a while to take down but they don’t change their attacks halfway through so as long as you stick to it, you will take them down.
Other Drops
- Bone, Exotic Flesh
- Horn
- Rhino Hide
- Rhino King Head
- Thick Hide
King Scorpion
- HP – 23,529
- Armor – 84
- KB Defense – 25
- XP – 108,000
- Location – Godsight Spire, Ironbreaker Ridge, Ravager’s Cleft, The Scorpion Den
King Scorpion has surprisingly high health and armor, so expect this fight to last a while. It fights just like a regular scorpion but hits harder. It also charges its attacks, so you can be ready to dodge and avoid damage in this fight.
Other Drops
- Chitin
- Exotic Flesh
- Ichor
Reptilian Monstrosity
- HP – 19,143
- Armor – 78
- KB Defense – 0
- XP – 99,000
- Location – Dagon’s Claw
Reptilian Monstrosity is a Legendary rhino-like creature that lives in the Jungle on the Exiled Lands. He’s not as tanky as King Rhino but is otherwise very similar to fight.
The small version of this creature is called Reptilian Monstrosity too but it is smaller and much, much weaker. It’s a good idea to farm a few of them to get a feel as to how they fight before taking on the Legendary.
Other Drops
- Bone
- Claws
- Exotic Flesh
- Fangs
- Reptile Hide
Rockslide
- HP – 4844
- Armor – 72
- KB Defense – 1500
- Location – Fingerfang Rock, The Claws, The Barrens, Siptah’s Contemplation, The Triune Grave
Rockslide is a slow creature with low health. Though he has decent armor, he is still an easy creature to take down because he has low health. He’s essentially just a large Rocknose, which is one of the most basic creatures in the game.
I usually fight these guys by kiting them from afar with a ranged weapon, which takes them down before they even begin the fight. It may be a cheese strategy, but I don’t care. Give me that Skeleton Key.
Other Drops
- Brimstone
- Demon Blood
- Stone
Rotbranch
- HP – 15,687
- Armor – 65
- KB Defense – 0
- XP – 108,000
- Location – Circle of Swords, Shattered Springs, Tarman’s Berth, The Dirgewood
Rotbranch is a creature with higher health but with less armor than his stone brother, Rockslide. So if you have good damage, you don’t need armor penetration to take him down.
He’s more like a gorilla than a Rocknose King though, with rolls, pounds, and sweeping attacks. His special attack summons branches from the ground to attack you, so watch out for that one.
Other Drops
- Bone
- Exotic Flesh
- Thick Hide
- Vines
Sand Reaper Hive Queen
- HP – 13, 760
- Armor – 78
- KB Defense – 25
- XP – 99,000
- Location – Oasis of Nekhet, Upper Staging Area, Voyager’s Vigil
The Sand Reaper Hive Queen always has Sand Reaper minions to help her fight. Her signature attack is when she rears up to charge her attack and applies poison, knocking you down. Of course, because she charges it, it’s easy to dodge.
Other Drops
- Chitin
- Feral Flesh
- Sand Reaper Toxin Gland
Shrouded-By-Darkness
- HP – 16,260
- Armor – 47
- KB Defense – 50
- XP – 64, 800
- Location – Lockstone Cave
Shrouded-By-Darkness is yet another Child of Jhil Demon boss in the Highlands. This one isn’t all that different from its siblings but it’s a decent fight considering he’s not exactly slow like larger creatures.
Other Drops
- Black Blood
- Hollowbone Arrows
The Tortured King
- HP – 17,000
- Location – King’s Niche
The Tortured King is another skeleton king creature that is just like all the others. You can find it in the Tundra Biome near the Unnamed City Biome in a little passageway called King’s Niche.
Inside, there is also a ton of skeletons to fight and plenty of iron chests with Gold in them. So this is a great place to get Gold while you’re there but I wouldn’t travel here to do so.
Other Drops
- Putrid Meat
- Demon Blood
- Bone
- Infused Wraps
Thunderfoot
- HP – 18,372
- Armor – 84
- KB Defense – 1000
- XP – 108,000
- Location – Boundary Spillway
Thunderfoot is an elephant Legendary Creature in Conan Exiles who is very tanky, as expected. If you’ve ever fought a Mammoth and got frustrated because he took forever to die, know that Thunderfoot has ten times the health with similar armor stats.
He has similar attacks as well, with tramples, charges, and a head shake that can knock you back. All around, he’s an annoying creature to fight but he doesn’t hit quite as hard as many other bosses.
Other Drops
- Elephant Hide
- Exotic Flesh
- Ivory
- Thick Hide
- Tusks
White Tiger
- HP – 20,750
- Armor – 78
- KB Defense – 50
- XP – 115,923
- Location – Boundary Spillway, King’s Niche, The Crowngrove, The Dryfalls
White Tiger is a Legendary Creature that you shouldn’t mess with if you are overconfident. It used to be an easy boss fight but now because of its high stats and quick movements, it’s one of the hardest.
Other Drops
- Claws
- Fangs
- Feline Pelt
- Feral Flesh
FAQs
Question: Does Every Legendary Creature Have a Legendary Chest?
Answer: No. Some Legendary Creatures do not have Legendary Chests near them, so to use the Skeleton Key they drop, you’ll have to go to a different location, usually next to a different Legendary Creature.
Question: Do All Legendary Creatures Drop Skeleton Keys?
Answer:Yes. At one time, there was a 50% chance, but now there is a 100% chance that the creature will drop a Skeleton Key as long as you use appropriate tools to harvest it.
Question: Does Each Legendary Chest Have Different Loot?
Answer: No. There is a loot pool that all Legendary Chests share. So no matter what level or what chest you are opening, there’s an equal chance to get any of the items that could be in a Legendary Chest.
Skeleton Keys Carry Early On
If you can get Skeleton Keys in the first half of the game, you will make the game much easier. Because now that you can open them at any level on most servers, you can get gear much better than anything you can make.
In Conan Exiles, you can equip anything, regardless of level. But you can’t make anything, as there are level requirements to craft or learn recipes. That’s why Skeleton Key items are loopholes that give you better weapons to make you feel overpowered at any stage in the game.
