What is a Mexican bowl cut called? ›

Often described as a bowl-like cut with a line-up and tapered sides, the Edgar is often associated with the modern ranchera/o aesthetic known as “takuache”and the “trokiando” (from the word truck) trucking scene.

Bowl cuts are so named because they give the appearance of an upside-down bowl on the head and are often created by placing a bowl on the head and cutting around it. This distinctive bowl shape distinguishes the bowl cut from other short haircuts.

The origin for the name Edgar is unconfirmed, although it is often misattributed to having been named after former Seattle Mariners baseball player Edgar Martínez sometime in early 2019. The hairstyle is associated with the Mexican Takuache aesthetic, often also called the Takuache haircut.

Historically, the bowl cut was popular among common European and Asian men, being an easy neat cut done by a non-professional. Indeed, it was done by putting a cooking pot of a fit size to the level of ears, and all hair below the rim was cut or shaved off. In some cultures it was a normal type of haircut.

It's something like a bowl-cut-meets-a-Caesar-cut and it's hugely popular among young Latinos, especially in California, Texas and Florida. You guessed it, it's the Edgar cut. But as beloved as the hairstyle is, it isn't without controversy.
